Seeking Eternal Rewards

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21)

We all work for rewards. A hard day’s work is rewarded with a pay check. A long work project is rewarded with a cold drink or a snack. Rewards are interesting things. After a while, we feel that we deserve them. In fact, we decide what we will do based on the reward that is offered at the end.

Jesus did the same thing. The difference is that His reward is eternal. He knew that the work of His hands today would fulfill the purposes for which He was sent to earth. And He knew that these purposes would produce eternal rewards that could not be measured in earthly terms.

When we serve, it’s hard to keep that eternal perspective. We are knee-deep in the daily activities that our outreach requires. In this very physical environment, we can’t help but think of our rewards in earthly terms.

Our treasure is a result of our willingness to complete the things that Jesus has put in front of us to do. That means that when we clean out that church basement, help with the puppets at vacation Bible school, paint a house or design the church bulletin, we have the opportunity to receive eternal rewards because of our faithfulness. But our heart must be focused there.

Are you willing to invest in long-term Kingdom work?
