Embrace Change!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
 (2 Corinthians 5:17)

This year we finally sold our old Jeep Cherokee. To my surprise, it impacted me much more deeply than I had anticipated. I had loved that old Jeep. It was a tough, well-built vehicle, which had carried us over many a back road and mountaintop without a whimper. Even though we regretted having to sell, it was beginning to reflect all the hard use we had put it through over the years, and it was time for a change.

It is important to understand the feelings we had for the old Jeep. Not all of us are willing to let go of the old things. A look at our cupboards, shelves and drawers will reveal the truth. Seldom are we willing to let go of the old ways. Change calls us to give up the old (the past) and accept the new (the present). We live in a changing world. The world changes, circumstances change and we change too.

Change is difficult for any of us to accept. In his book The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell writes, “we need to prepare ourselves for the possibility that sometimes big changes follow from small events and that some times these changes can happen very quickly.”

Many events in our lives bring change; births, deaths, marriage and sickness are some of them. The world changes, our circumstances change and we change too. Change is so much a part of us that the call to repentance, the born again experience, the daily renewal of our mind, the process of sanctification are all part of the whole spiritual transformation that are related to change.

Our creator calls us to create new ways of living. We know that God’s mercies are new every morning. (Lamentations 3:22, 23) We all hope for a new heaven and a new earth and the Lord who sits on the throne says “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21: 5) The creator God wants us to be creative and reflect his image in our lives.

I can change, you can change; we all can change with God’s help so that lives and communities can be transformed through an encounter with Jesus Christ. Would you join me in the roller coaster ride of change?

Spend time today reflecting on how you can change and also become an agent of change.

Merry Christmas!

"The Nile Project"

2012 has been an amazing year for Asia International Mission. We pause and reflect on the goodness of God as we imagine the smiling faces of the people whom God has granted us the privilege of serving. The message of the Gospel has penetrated the darkness of their world with its beacon of hope. We rejoice knowing that many people in India will be celebrating their first Christmas as believers. Many more will be hearing from their village pastors about the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

We can also imagine the faces of children that will be learning the Christmas story as they attend their local Christmas Pageants. All this was made possible by the generosity of our many friends. As we look toward the New Year, please considering giving a special gift so that our work with the lost and hurting of India may continue. Just click Here to donate through our secure server. Go Bless you.

Jesus Transforms People

"Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." (Luke 24:39)

Think back to an experience that changed your life. I'm sure you can think of several moments that have defined your character, your career and your family. Experiences are key to service. They provide the transformational moments that cause us to make big decisions, take risks and focus our attention.

The moment when the disciples saw the wounds of Jesus after the resurrection had to be a powerful life-changing one for them. Imagine what it would be like to go from despair to celebration in a matter of minutes. They had given up on the cause that had taken them far from family and home only to realize that all was not lost—Jesus was with them!

You can be sure that this incredible experience gave the disciples strength and courage as they faced the many challenges of sharing the gospel throughout Jerusalem, Judea and the ends of the earth. How have the experiences in your life transformed you and focused you on God’s will and direction?

When God allows a dramatic experience to happen in your life, He is doing it for a reason, and He is striving to get your attention. If you’re open to His leading in those moments, Jesus can mobilize your voice and your hands in a powerful way.

How can you use what God has done for you to help comfort others?

There Is A Cost

"Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me." (Luke 9:23)

The cost-benefit ratio of following God's lead and serving overseas is complex. Are there benefits? Absolutely! We can count abundant benefits to our family, our marriage, and our spiritual lives. There are many, many benefits to living a life of service, at home and overseas.

But, are there costs? Absolutely! There are, daily, painful, and difficult costs on our lives.

I think there is a cost anytime you follow God out of obedience. In scripture He calls it ”taking up our cross.” There is always a cost to following Christ.

The cross...although it brings innumerable benefits...is painful and heavy. Although the costs of moving out of your home culture to serve alongside the Good Shepherd are unique, these costs are heavy.

This is the cost:
-not being there for the final moments of your parents life.
-missing your niece’s birth.
-having your young child ask you again, "Who is that person? What is his name?" And,
he is referring to your brother, his uncle.
-missing those in-between years when nephews grow from babies to boys...boys to men.
-missing that graduation, that 50th birthday party and the Thanksgiving dinner.
-being forgotten, or instead, being so deeply missed that you are the source of someone's
 pain. Which is better?
-raising kids that are not “normal.” And, they know it.
-not having that youth group, Grandma's mentoring, or that Christian friend for
 a young budding daughter.
-not having that exciting, vibrant worship service each week.
-not having a primary care doctor that knows you, has known your medical history or
 even your name.
-not being there when your best friend passes away.
This is the cost.

Is it worth it? Of course it’s worth it! You know what He has asked of you. And, you know His will is for His glory and our best. You know the benefits.

So, of course it is worth it! “Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)

The benefits most definitely outweigh the cost, Always! Where else are we to go?
But, there is a cost. And, there is a cross.
And, we must carry it. And, yes, there is a cost.
