"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." (Mark 12:29-31)
Although Jesus taught us that there are two commandments
that are the greatest of all, He doesn't want us to consider them apart from
each another. The reason? He also told us that when we love the "least of
these" among our neighbors, we actually love Him, as they are members of
His body.
We love God by loving our neighbors. It is so amazing to think
that we can show our love for Jesus by meeting the pressing needs of His family
members. Knowing this also helps us to accurately gauge our love for Jesus. How
much do I love Jesus? That answer is found in how much I love the "least
of these."
The depth of our love is measured, not by warm feelings, but
by the amount of sacrifice. We are wise to ask ourselves, not "How much
have I given?" but, "How much do I have remaining?" Jesus
taught, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13)
