"Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out-- the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry." Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up!" The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. They were all filled with awe and praised God. "A great prophet has appeared among us," they said. "God has come to help his people." (Luke 7:11-16)
Living in today’s world, we have the shocking opportunity to see
more tragedy in a 24-hour period than most of humanity has seen for
centuries. Television, the Internet, magazines, all feed us 24/7 updates on the crisis that inflicts our fallen world. In this environment it’s hard to have
compassion. To cope, we simply turn it off and as a result, our hearts are
hardened.
In Jesus' day, He did not experience global tragedy
through His eyes, but He saw more sorrow than most people of His day. This was because so many of them came to Him, hoping to be healed. You can
imagine that many days He was surrounded with suffering from morning till
dusk.
That's what makes the verses above so incredible. Even with
all the suffering that He saw, He still had deep compassion. His heart was not
hard to the suffering of people, but instead He cared deeply for their hurts and
struggles. Whether you are reaching out to a neighbor, or a street child in another country, Jesus can give you that same soft, tender heart for those who
desperately need love and care.
