What Is a Missionary?

"Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28;18-20)

What is a missionary? I mean, really?

Is it a full-time minister in Africa?

Is it a nurse in Latin America?

Is it a school teacher in the inner city?

It's hard to tell these days. I remember talking to a young lady who said that she wasn't a "real" missionary. She had been traveling with a ministry team for months, sharing the message of Jesus every single day.

But she didn't consider herself a missionary. Not in the purest sense of the word. Why?

Because she wasn't like the missionaries of old that she had heard about while growing up in church. Not like the nice people that her family threw potluck dinners for. Not like the characters in the old mission books she read. Not Mother Theresa. Not a spiritual heroine (at least, not in her estimation).

I think that is wrong.

A missionary, in the general sense of the word, is defined as "one who is sent on a mission." My definition of a Christian missionary is someone who joins God in his mission on earth. A missionary is a minister in the sense that every Christian is called to minister -- that is, to be a servant of others.

A missionary is anyone called by God... which is everyone who calls themselves a Christian.

In other words, You are a missionary.

So, let's act like it.

Praise the Lord! We are excited about the near completion of our newest Children's Home. The main structure is completed, doors and windows in, and the whole building is painted. All that's left is some interior electrical work, and flooring. An huge thanks to everyone who was a part of this project to provide a home, food, clothing, education, and the love of God to an additional 100 abandoned children. May God bless you.
