Convenient Christianity

It is evident to many people today that we live in a country perfectly happy with a "Convenient Christianity." Some of the Church is satisfied to be involved in the Lord's Great Commission as little as possible. Many Christians want only to attend a service, see their friends, and listen to a sermon that doesn't upset the status quo.

A few years ago, I read an article written by Elizabeth Elliot relating her passionate pursuit of Jesus, and the radical desire she and her husband had to fulfill the Great Commission. As they traveled--attempting to stir others with a passion to go to the nations--they talked of their passion to follow Jesus to the ends of the earth, and how it might even mean giving up their life for Christ.

There are many people today willing to travel overseas, either long or short term, with a commitment and passion to take back the world from satan, and win it for Christ. But at what price?

There will be some suffering, some loss, and a whole lot of passion. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians and said, "...I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord..."  (Philippians 3:8)
He was talking about his passionate pursuit of Jesus. Then later in verse 17 he said, "Join with others in following my example."

Will you follow his example? Are you willing to make Jesus your "passion"? The words of Jim Elliot still ring clearly the heart of passion, "He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."

What will you give? You may think you can't afford very much, but you can't keep it forever anyway. So, why not give it to Jesus?
